Summary
More than 600 objects from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and five territories are now on view at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in “From These Lands,” which runs through 2029.
The exhibition and companion book use the museum’s collections to link natural and cultural history, a concept curators said grew from staff submissions about place, landscape and the stories tied to specific objects.
Featured pieces range from a Menominee dugout canoe and Guam blacksmithing tools to megalodon teeth, walrus-tusk carving and Arizona petrified wood, underscoring both human influence and environmental change.
More than 100 objects also appear in the book, which aims to help visitors connect their own regions to a broader national story as the U.S. approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding.
