3,871 Waymo robotaxis are being recalled after the company found software could let autonomous vehicles enter freeway construction zones and continue driving at speed.
13 incidents in Phoenix and San Francisco during April and May exposed the problem, according to a Wednesday filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The recall centers on Waymo’s construction-zone recognition system, which failed to correctly identify those freeway work areas.
The move adds to scrutiny of autonomous-vehicle safety as Waymo works to expand driverless operations in major U.S. cities.
