GSK Launches Phase 1 Malaria Antibody Trial in 40 Adults

Summary
GSK has started a first-in-human phase 1 trial of a monoclonal antibody aimed at preventing Plasmodium falciparum, the deadliest and most widespread malaria parasite.
About 40 healthy adults ages 18 to 65 will receive low, medium, or high intravenous doses, with low and medium subcutaneous doses and a placebo also being tested.
The dose-escalation study is designed primarily to track adverse and serious adverse events over 364 days, making safety the key early benchmark.
The program adds another experimental approach to malaria prevention, using an antibody rather than a vaccine to target a parasite that causes the most lethal form of the disease.
