Trump declined in France to say Putin bears greater responsibility for the war in Ukraine, telling reporters he would not comment while trying to negotiate an end to the conflict.
Speaking after meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump said he had productive talks with both Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Putin but argued the two leaders' poor personal relationship makes a deal harder.
Trump added that he has ended eight wars and had expected Ukraine to be among the easiest to resolve, underscoring his view that diplomacy remains possible despite stalled fighting.
The remarks came after Trump said at the G7 he was open to backing Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia if European allies helped with demining the Strait of Hormuz.
