Not completely, but it could get close enough for many users if Valve’s implementation is strong and the home network is ideal. The case for Steam Frame is credible. FCC and import leaks point to a “streaming-first” headset built around Wi‑Fi 7, a dedicated PC dongle, eye tracking, and foveated streaming. That combination matters: Wi‑Fi 7 brings lower latency tools such as Multi‑Link Operation, better interference handling through preamble puncturing, and access to cleaner 6 GHz spectrum. Valve’s use of eye tracking to send the highest bitrate only where the user is looking should also reduce bandwidth pressure, which is critical for dual 2160x2160 displays at high refresh rates. That said, a cable still sets the reliability standard. Wired links remain more consistent because they avoid the core weaknesses of wireless: interference, signal drops, congestion, and latency spikes. Those problems are less severe with Wi‑Fi 7 than with earlier wireless PCVR setups, especially if Steam Frame keeps traffic on a dedicated 6 GHz link, but they are not eliminated. So the real answer depends less on the spec sheet than on the room it is used in. In a clean network environment with a strong router or Valve’s dedicated adapter, Steam Frame could feel effectively cable-free without major compromise. In crowded apartments, noisy RF conditions, or weaker home setups, a wired connection will still be the safer option for absolute consistency, image stability, and motion comfort.

Six newly posted FCC documents show Valve’s upcoming Steam Frame hardware in detail and confirm an “Enthusiast Kit” that includes a hot-swappable battery pack for the headset.
The user-manual language is the key reveal: it says the kit “also includes” the battery pack, suggesting Valve may bundle additional accessories beyond the swappable power module.
Photos in the filing also show the controllers’ internals, external design and FCC test setup, while the headset battery appears mounted at the rear of the head strap.
That placement points to either a redesigned strap or an existing strap that opens for battery swaps, adding to signs Valve is nearing a broader Steam Frame announcement ahead of its expected Summer 2026 release.
