Probably not. The USGA’s 2026 setup looks designed to make Shinnecock Hills fairer and more playable than in the controversial 2004 and 2018 editions, but not easy enough to erase the course’s identity or produce a record-low winning score. The evidence points to moderation, not taming. The USGA plans wider fairways than in 2018, slower greens around 11.5 to 12 on the Stimpmeter, and more active moisture management, including syringing between waves. Brooks Koepka said the course already feels “a lot softer” and the greens “slower” than he remembers. Those changes should reduce the risk of unplayable conditions and make the test more consistent across the field. But Shinnecock’s core defenses remain intact. It is still a 7,440-yard par 70 with exposed, links-style terrain, deep fescue rough, punishing bunkers and greens that demand precise approaches and smart misses. Most important, the forecast calls for sustained winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts above 30 mph and possibly over 40 on some days. Rory McIlroy said in practice that balls “wouldn’t stand” on the 11th green in those gusts. History also argues against a scoring spree. The lowest winning score at a U.S. Open at Shinnecock is Retief Goosen’s 4-under in 2004, and Brooks Koepka won at 1-over in 2018. The USGA may avoid another setup controversy, but with Shinnecock’s architecture and the expected wind, a winning score near par still looks far more likely than a record low.
