Epic released Unreal Engine 5.8 on Wednesday with an experimental Model Context Protocol plugin that lets developers connect models such as Claude and Gemini directly to the engine.
The company said the tools are meant to automate tedious work—asset creation, testing, optimization, lighting and layout—while still allowing manual editing inside Unreal.
UE6 is set to make that AI layer core to the engine, alongside Epic's plan to merge Unreal Engine 5 and Unreal Editor for Fortnite into a single platform; early access is targeted for late 2027.
