Summary
Wednesday’s restoration returned Syria’s internet traffic to normal capacity after sabotage disrupted the undersea fiber link between Tartus and Alexandria.
Syria Telecom had rerouted traffic through the 239-km Ugarit Cable System to Cyprus and another line crossing Turkiye, which CereTel has used for Aleppo since early June.
The state operator called the damage part of a “systematic sabotage campaign” against infrastructure as Syria rebuilds after 13 years of civil war.
World Bank data shows about 66% of Syrians still lack internet access, underscoring how vulnerable connectivity remains despite recent upgrades such as contactless payments introduced last May.
