Q: Is a wired puck the key to lightweight AR, or a major hurdle for users?

A wired puck is both the key to XREAL AURA’s lightweight design and its biggest usability compromise. The case for it is strong. By moving the Snapdragon Reality Elite chip, battery, and heat away from the glasses, XREAL keeps AURA under 95 grams while still offering a 70-degree field of view, 6DOF tracking, hand tracking, Android XR apps, and on-device AI features through Gemini. That split-compute design directly addresses the hardest AR engineering problems: weight, thermals, battery life, and latency. Qualcomm and XREAL are effectively trading pocket bulk for face comfort, and that is why AURA can look more like glasses than a headset. But the cable and puck remain a real barrier for mainstream use. Users must carry another device, manage a wire, and accept a setup that is less seamless for walking around, commuting, or casual all-day wear. Industry evidence points the same way: tethered or puck-based systems can deliver better performance in lighter eyewear, but they are often seen as transitional products rather than the end state. Even supporters describe the puck as something the industry eventually wants to remove. So the answer depends on the goal. For near-term, high-performance AR that is actually wearable, the wired puck is probably the most practical solution available. For mass adoption, it is still a hurdle. Consumers may accept it for gaming, productivity, and enterprise use before they accept it as everyday ambient eyewear.

Fall 2026 is the target launch window for XREAL Aura, with the base model capped at under $1,500 before taxes across the US, UK, Japan, South Korea and selected EU markets.
Two reservation options are now open: a $300 Founder Priority Pass limited to 2,000 units and applied to the final price, or a $100 fee that converts into a $200 discount for later shipments.
