Q: Was the Bible verse on the Pride cap an act of faith, or a protest co-opting an LGBTQ+ symbol?

It was both: the players described it as an expression of Christian faith, but in the setting of a Pride Night cap it also functioned, and was widely read, as a protest against the LGBTQ+ meaning of the rainbow. The strongest evidence for the faith interpretation is the players’ own explanation. Landen Roupp said Genesis 9:12-16 referred to God’s covenant with Noah and that the rainbow is, to him, a biblical symbol. He said there was “no hate” intended and framed the inscription as personal belief rather than an attack. That aligns with the text of the verse itself, which is explicitly about the rainbow in scripture. But context matters. The verse was written on a rainbow-themed cap issued for Pride Night, where the rainbow is also a well-established symbol of LGBTQ+ identity and inclusion. In that setting, reclaiming the rainbow’s biblical meaning inevitably carried a counter-message. That perception was reinforced by teammate Sam Hentges choosing not to wear the Pride cap because he said he did not want to support something he morally opposed. MLB’s response did not settle the motive question. The league said the warning was routine and content-neutral because any writing on caps violates uniform rules. Even so, the Giants later apologized for the pain caused to LGBTQ+ fans, reflecting how the act was received. So the most accurate reading is that it was a sincere act of faith expressed in a way that also operated as a symbolic protest. Intent and impact were not the same.
