New York Law Institute Opposes 5-Borough Fiber Plan, Citing Financial Risks

Summary
A June 16 op-ed from the Advanced Communications Law and Policy Institute argued New York City’s proposed “Internet for All” network would do little to fix the city’s internet problems.
Michael Santorelli and Alex Karras said the city-owned, open-access fiber build across all five boroughs would expose New York to significant financial and operational risks.
The proposal was put forward in late May by Public Advocate Jumaane Williams as a citywide broadband plan.
The critique adds early policy resistance to a municipal broadband push that would require the city to build and run a large-scale fiber network.
