Summary
726,800 tourism jobs were recorded in Australia in the March quarter, down 8,200 from the December quarter and equal to 4.5% of all filled jobs.
Part-time employment drove the decline, with male part-time roles falling by 6,400 and female part-time roles by 5,600, partly offset by 3,200 more full-time jobs held by males.
Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services led the quarterly losses, shedding 5,600 jobs, while clubs, pubs, taverns and bars cut 2,200.
The sector still employed 29,500 more people than a year earlier, up 4.2%, with growth across 11 of 12 tourism industries led by a 2,500-job gain in cafes and restaurants.
