Grade 4 math posted the biggest gain in Texas’ spring 2026 STAAR results, rising 4 percentage points as statewide grades 3-8 scores improved in math and social studies while reading was mostly steady.
Grade 8 reading rose 3 points and Grade 7 reading 2 points, while Grade 8 social studies increased to 32% of students meeting grade level from 30%.
32% of Texas seventh graders took the Grade 8 math exam this spring, up from 16% in 2023 after a law expanded automatic placement into advanced middle-school math pathways.
65,418 low-income seventh graders took that Grade 8 math test, and TEA said every enrolled grade level showed higher math proficiency when results are measured by students' actual grade rather than test taken.
Science scores for Grades 5 and 8 will be released July 31 after standard-setting tied to updated curriculum standards, while families can already access individual reports and some Grade 3 reading families may qualify for up to $400 in tutoring aid.
