Summary
A second woman died Monday after both victims were swept into the water Wednesday near Yellowbank Beach, bringing the Santa Cruz County incident’s death toll to two.
Harshita Nair, 21, and Mahial Sran, 20, both of Fremont, were believed to have been sleeping near the Keyhole area when the incoming tide caught them off guard.
About eight responders entered the water during the rescue, with one woman brought ashore at Yellowbank Beach and the other pulled from a nearby beach before both were taken to hospitals.
CAL FIRE said the operation was the fifth rescue along a 1-mile stretch between Yellowbank Beach and Bonny Doon Beach in the past month, underscoring how quickly the access point can become trapped by tides.
