Summary
Thessaloniki became MIX’s first site outside Italy last year, giving the Milan-based internet exchange a hub linking the Balkans, Central Europe, Turkey and the Middle East.
Edge-connectivity demand across Southern Europe is driving the move, as operators seek lower-latency routes and broader reach beyond traditional hubs such as Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam and Paris.
MIX is expanding from a strong Milan base, where it connects more than 460 networks, supports nearly 22Tbps of installed capacity and sees daily traffic peaks above 3.7Tbps.
That scale is backed by owned infrastructure: MIX opened its DC3 data room in Milan in 2025, lifting the Caldera campus to about 1,400 square metres and up to 2MW of power.
The company plans one or two more Italian PoPs within 12 months and says its low-cost, community-focused model can be replicated in other international locations.
