Naoki Hamaguchi’s next game is expected to be a new JRPG, but not another remake. After spending roughly a decade on the Final Fantasy VII remake project and now finishing it with Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Hamaguchi has said he wants his next creative work to be a JRPG while moving away from revisiting older titles. He has explicitly indicated he does not want to direct a remake such as Final Fantasy VI, saying that kind of project would be better handled by someone else at Square Enix. By his own account, the possibilities range from a new Final Fantasy entry to an entirely new intellectual property, and he has described a fresh IP as an especially exciting challenge. He has also suggested he is open to different scales, from a smaller AA-style project to a new AAA franchise. For now, his priority remains delivering Final Fantasy VII Revelation, due in Spring 2027, as the finale to the remake trilogy. He has also left open the possibility of post-launch DLC if fan demand is strong. But based on his public comments, the clearest answer is that Hamaguchi’s next “world” will likely be an original JRPG setting or a brand-new mainline-style Final Fantasy project, rather than another remake.
