Brent Woodall endorsed Jim Zeigler in Tuesday’s Republican runoff for Alabama Public Service Commission Place 2, giving Zeigler a potential opening to consolidate Woodall’s voters.
18% is the share Woodall won in the May primary, where Zeigler led with 45% and incumbent Chris Beeker III took 25%, forcing a runoff because no candidate cleared 50%.
Zeigler said internal polling shows a close race and called the endorsement vital as he tries to win over Woodall supporters before the final vote.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars are being spent on negative ads against Zeigler, who cast the contest as a fight against well-financed Montgomery insiders after finishing 20 points ahead of the incumbent.
