Myanmar Detains AGS Founder Adam Castillo at Yangon Airport Over Financial Misconduct Allegations

The available evidence points to Adam Castillo as the alleged beneficiary of the missing $300,000, though the chamber’s report stops short of naming him directly. AmCham Myanmar’s May 29 annual report says a “former board representative” signed an unauthorized November 2024 contract with a Washington-based public relations firm. Under that deal, $300,000 was paid and was “apparently collected and disbursed outside AMCHAM Myanmar’s accounts.” The chamber said it received no money, made no payments, and got no services in return. The agreement was not approved by the board and was not disclosed to auditors. Castillo, who served as AmCham Myanmar president from 2023 to 2025, was later detained after the chamber filed a complaint over suspicious financial transactions. Additional reporting says he is accused of using the organization’s name to collect funds from member companies for personal gain, and he faces allegations equivalent to breach of trust or embezzlement. That said, there is still an important gap: AmCham publicly identified only “a former board representative” and said two former board members were involved, without naming them. So while reporting strongly indicates Castillo was the person who benefited, that remains an allegation tied to the chamber’s complaint and the ongoing investigation, not a publicly proven fact.
