Summary
A two-week South Atlantic expedition off Brazil identified 31 previously unknown midwater species, including nine jellies, seven siphonophores and seven ctenophores.
AI-assisted tools drove the discoveries: MBARI’s DeepPIV used laser light to create 3D in situ visualizations, while EyeRIS captured 3D images of animals’ structure and movement in their natural habitat.
Rapid genome sequencing paired with high-resolution imagery also helped scientists identify delicate organisms that traditional sampling methods often damage, including larvaceans, rhizarians, an amphipod and a gossamer worm.
The mission targeted the ocean midwater—described by expedition leader Karen Osborn as the “last and largest frontier”—to better understand species that play a critical but poorly understood role in ocean function and health.
