Q: Is the Switch 2's 64GB game card already obsolete for the future of graphically demanding handheld games?

Not yet, but it is likely to become a constraint for the biggest third-party games. The early Switch 2 eShop listings do not suggest an immediate problem. The revealed titles are modest in size, with *The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales* at 16.6GB and *Junkster* at 8.6GB, well below a 64GB card. For Nintendo-style releases and many mid-sized games, 64GB remains workable. The pressure comes from where handheld gaming is heading. More advanced rendering, larger worlds, higher-quality textures, and AI upscaling support generally push file sizes upward. On rival platforms and PC, many graphically demanding games already exceed 64GB, often landing between 90GB and 150GB. Switch 2 versions would usually be compressed and scaled down, but not always enough to fit comfortably on a 64GB card, especially once patches, language packs, or DLC are considered. That is why Nintendo’s reported use of “Game-Key Cards” matters. If a card mainly serves as a license while the full game is downloaded, it gives publishers a way around the 64GB ceiling and lowers manufacturing costs. It also suggests Nintendo and third parties expect some games to outgrow standard physical media. So the 64GB card is not obsolete today, but it is unlikely to be sufficient as a universal physical format for the most graphically demanding handheld games over the next few years. For premium, large-scale ports, download-dependent releases will probably become increasingly common.

North America, Europe and Japan eShop listings disclosed file sizes for more than 40 upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch games, with The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales topping the list at 16.6GB.
Switch 2 entries were led by Junkster at 8.6GB, while And Roger and The Last Salvage Squad came in far smaller at 700MB and 431MB.
On Switch, the biggest downloads included R-Type Tactics 1-2 Cosmos at 11.3GB, Speed Dates Summer Edition at 10.4GB and Jurnal Risa: Dark Destiny at 3.9GB.
Most of the remaining Switch titles were modest in size, ranging from about 2.1GB for Soccer Kid Collection down to 44MB for Eggconsole Zodiac PC-8801.
