Q: With 40k's 11th Edition launching, why are 10th Edition codexes still valid, and what does this mean for players' existing armies?

10th Edition codexes remain valid because Warhammer 40,000’s 11th Edition is being introduced as a refinement of the current game, not a full rules reset. Games Workshop has said the new edition keeps existing faction books and recent supplements legal at launch, while the 11th Edition core rules arrive as a free digital download. For players, that means existing armies do not become obsolete overnight. If you own a 10th Edition codex, you can keep using that book and your current faction rules when 11th Edition begins. You do not need to immediately replace your army book just to stay playable, which is a major change from the 9th-to-10th transition, when older codexes were effectively retired. The practical effect is a smoother handover. Core gameplay will change in areas such as detachments, terrain, objectives and combat flow, but current codexes will be carried forward through FAQs, balance updates and faction PDFs where needed. Those updates are expected to make older books fit the new framework rather than wipe them out. It also means players can keep using their existing models, army builds and most of their current rules while waiting for their faction’s dedicated 11th Edition codex. Once that new codex arrives, it will replace the 10th Edition version for that army. Until then, current books remain the official bridge into the new edition.

General’s Handbook 2026-27 leads next week’s Age of Sigmar releases with 12 new battleplans, Aqshian Crusades campaign rules, updated Advanced Rules modules, and new Aqshy lore.
Hedonites of Slaanesh anchor the faction launch through a new battletome, a Gamer’s Edition, and boxed sets including the Epicurean Revellers Spearhead and Decadent Host battleforce.
New Slaanesh units and accessories include the Lord of Hysteria, Thricefold Discord, Accursed Reflection Regiment of Renown, warscroll cards, and a 16-die faction set.
Skaven also get fresh support with 10 Gutter Runners, Deathmaster Crixxit, and the City of Ash gaming pack, which adds two Spearhead forces and a double-sided board.
The wider release slate also includes Horus Heresy reissues and Gloomspite in hardback, with some products delayed in Japan and South Korea.
