Six hours from the finish, the No. 20 BMW M Hybrid V8 leads Le Mans after the No. 12 Jota Cadillac was penalized for a slow-zone procedure infraction at the end of hour 17.
That penalty knocked Cadillac behind BMW and the No. 8 Toyota, capping a slide that began after sunrise as the former leader steadily lost pace; the top three remain on slightly different tire cycles and have traded positions.
Toyota still has the outright speed edge, with Brendon Hartley setting the race’s fastest lap at 3:25.4—more than half a second quicker than the best laps from the leading BMW and Cadillac.
Cadillac’s challenge has also been hurt by major issues for the sister No. 38 car just after halfway, leaving no Cadillac in the top two as BMW chases its first Le Mans win since the 1990s.
