In other words, on quality alone, it stood out. Its U.S. problem is not that it failed as a tequila stylistically. It is that this specific bottling is 35% ABV. U.S. federal rules generally require tequila sold on American shelves to be at least 40% ABV, even though 35% is legal in Mexico. That makes direct U.S. distribution difficult, so it is effectively shut out of normal retail channels. That is why there is no real contradiction. A private competition can name a spirit “world’s best” based on blind tasting and craftsmanship, but that does not override import, labeling and alcohol-strength rules in the United States. Awards are quality endorsements, not regulatory approvals. There is also a market wrinkle: this is an ultra-premium, limited-availability tequila priced around $325 in Mexico and aimed at sipping, not mass distribution. So even without the ABV issue, it would likely remain scarce. The award may still help the brand pursue a compliant U.S. version or wider international reach.
