At Sunday’s Angelus, Pope Leo XIV voiced sorrow for 37 people killed in the Philippines earthquake and asked prayers for their families, the injured and others suffering from the disaster.
The appeal followed a 7.8-magnitude quake that struck off the Philippine coast on June 8 and triggered tsunami warnings across several countries.
Leo said he felt close to the Filipino people “struck a few days ago by a strong earthquake,” framing the deaths as part of a wider humanitarian toll.
Separately, the pope also hailed several beatifications in Europe and Brazil, honoring martyrs and missionaries as examples for priests and the wider Church.
