Rayman Legends Retold Demo Impresses on Switch 2 at 60 FPS as $39.99 Preorders Open

Q: Is Rayman Legends Retold a simple remake, or Ubisoft's secret test for a brand new Rayman 4?

Rayman Legends Retold appears to be both: a substantial remake in its own right and a deliberate foundation for whatever comes next in the Rayman series. The game is clearly not a simple remaster. Ubisoft has rebuilt it with a major visual overhaul in the Snowdrop engine, added new levels, new music, full voice acting, expanded story material, new hub areas, a new realm, and new gameplay sequences such as the dragon-riding stages. The Summer Game Fest preview also suggests the core platforming remains intact, even if the shift to a more realistic 3D look has divided some longtime fans. Just as important, Ubisoft is not hiding its broader intent. Developers and brand leadership have described Retold as a “starting point for the future of Rayman” and a “foundation” for the franchise. That makes it less a secret test than an openly strategic one: a way to reintroduce Rayman, modernize the world and lore, and measure audience appetite after a long hiatus. There is still no announced Rayman 4. But multiple reports indicate Ubisoft has discussed a future, more ambitious 3D Rayman project, and that Retold’s reception and sales could influence whether that moves forward. In that sense, Retold functions as both a reimagining and a market test. So the best reading is that Ubisoft is using Rayman Legends Retold to do two jobs at once: sell a refreshed version of a proven classic, and see whether the franchise is ready for a full new chapter.

Three demo levels at Summer Game Fest 2026 suggested Rayman Legends Retold preserves the original’s tight platforming feel despite its remake-scale visual overhaul.
New content drove much of that optimism: a dragon flying stage added on-rails dodging, barrel rolls, fireballs and shifts between 3D and 2D perspectives, while more new levels are planned in a brand-new world.
60 FPS performance in handheld mode on Nintendo Switch 2 also stood out, with the demo showing solid visual quality during the hands-on session.
The main reservation was the art direction: the more realistic 3D style adds detail and lighting but sheds some of the charm and vibrancy associated with the 2013 original.
