Comcast Rolls Out DOCSIS 4.0 for Multi-Gig Speeds Across 39 States

If you want Xfinity’s very fastest new DOCSIS 4.0 “X-Class” speeds, you still generally cannot buy the required gateway at retail yet. As of early-to-mid 2026, Comcast’s XB10 remains the main option for that service, and consumer DOCSIS 4.0 modems were still not broadly available in stores. Retail availability has been anticipated for mid-to-late 2026, but no firm customer purchase date is confirmed here. For most other Xfinity plans, including many gigabit and multi-gig tiers, customers do not need to wait. They can already avoid the rental fee by buying an approved third-party modem, typically a DOCSIS 3.1 model, as long as it appears on Xfinity’s compatibility list. For newer “Next-Gen” speed tiers with improved uploads, some approved retail modems are already available, including models such as the Hitron CODA56 and Netgear Nighthawk CM3000. The key distinction is between Comcast’s proprietary gateway and customer-owned compatible hardware. Xfinity does not typically sell its own xFi gateways directly. So if a customer specifically wants the new XB10 used for top DOCSIS 4.0 service, the answer is: not yet, at least not broadly through retail channels. If the goal is simply to stop paying the monthly equipment fee, many customers can do that now with approved third-party equipment, though they may give up some xFi app features, hotspot access, and Advanced Security tools.

Comcast has begun deploying DOCSIS 4.0 in select Xfinity markets, using its existing hybrid fiber-coax network to deliver multi-gigabit downloads and higher upload capacity without a full fiber rebuild.
The upgrade matters because most Xfinity homes still run on DOCSIS cable infrastructure, where current tiers range from about 75 Mbps to 1,200 Mbps and upload speeds typically lag far behind downloads.
