That does not happen without real roster depth, strong player development and financial muscle. Boone’s confidence in the club’s “deep roster” is backed by results: Ben Rice has emerged, Cody Bellinger has produced, Spencer Jones has contributed early, and Jasson Domínguez is back quickly enough to help cover another outfield hole. Grisham’s injury also shows why the approach has worked. He had become one of the Yankees’ best hitters since May 1, posting a 141 wRC+, yet the club still had a credible replacement path ready with Domínguez returning and Jones already on hand. That is exactly what “next man up” is supposed to look like. But it is also fragile. The Yankees are not replacing fringe players; they are covering for stars and core pitchers. Judge’s rib injury, Fried’s elbow issue, Stanton’s calf strain, and the broader pitching health concerns around Gerrit Cole, Clarke Schmidt and Carlos Rodón create cumulative risk. Depth can keep a team afloat, but it rarely replicates star-level production over months. So the Yankees’ model is a strength, not a mirage. But if the injury wave grows, even a deep roster can shift from competitive advantage to survival exercise.
