Summary
Sunday and Monday, Portland Street Response will send mobile “cooling cars” across the city with water, ice, sunscreen, cooling towels and spray bottles to curb heat illness.
East Portland will get extra attention, especially the 82nd Avenue and Sandy Boulevard areas that crews say often receive less outreach traffic.
The teams can also transport people to cooling centers, aiming to prevent cases from escalating to 911 calls for heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
An additional emergency response rig is ready for severe cases, as EMTs say they handle regular heat-exhaustion calls each warm season and see several heat-related deaths.
