Q: Can an interim title win truly cement Alex Pereira as the greatest fighter of all time?

No. An interim heavyweight title over Ciryl Gane would be a historic achievement for Alex Pereira, but it would not by itself settle the GOAT debate. The case for Pereira would become much stronger because he would be the first fighter in UFC history to win titles in three divisions, even if the heavyweight belt is interim. That matters, especially given how quickly he has risen in MMA after already becoming a two-division GLORY kickboxing champion. Dana White has said that such a win would make Pereira the greatest ever, and it would certainly push him into the top tier of all-time discussions. But “cementing” GOAT status usually requires more than a single landmark win, especially when the belt is not undisputed. Interim titles carry less weight than lineal championships because they do not prove supremacy over the reigning champion. That is why Daniel Cormier’s view is important: he argues Pereira would still need to defend at heavyweight, and likely unify the title, before surpassing names such as Jon Jones, Georges St-Pierre, Anderson Silva or Khabib Nurmagomedov. Resume depth also matters. Pereira has elite wins and rare multi-division success, but the GOAT standard is usually built on longevity, title defenses, dominance, and victories over multiple generations of top contenders. A win over Gane would be one of the most remarkable accomplishments the sport has seen. It would not end the argument, but it would make Pereira’s path to that label very real.

Dana White said the UFC will stage the event on the White House South Lawn “no matter what,” even after the press conference was delayed about an hour by bad weather and thunderstorms remain in the forecast.
Friday’s show was cleared after a judge rejected a federal lawsuit challenging the event, which the UFC says has cost about $60 million and will be the first professional live sporting event on White House grounds.
