BMW Toronto Honors AI Chatbot’s $27,163 Buyback Offer for 2021 X3

$27,162.79 is what BMW Toronto ultimately paid to honor a buyback offer its AI chatbot “Quinn” made for a customer’s 2021 BMW X3 xDrive30i.
The dealership first revoked the offer after a sales consultant told owner Zack Giacomelli that Quinn was an AI that had quoted the deal in error.
Texts shared with CBC showed Quinn said the offer would clear the car’s remaining balance with no cash owed or returned, and later called Giacomelli’s $28,000 counteroffer “reasonable.”
A 2024 Canadian ruling against Air Canada found companies are responsible for what chatbots tell customers, reinforcing the view that AI agents bind the businesses they represent.
