45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal was found dead inside an abandoned Midland veterinary clinic hours after opening fire Friday, in an attack that killed one person and injured 10 others.
Authorities said Villarreal had already been wanted for attempted capital murder after allegedly firing multiple times at a Midland police officer during a traffic stop and chase on Wednesday.
Midland Memorial Hospital said four victims underwent surgery and five others were treated and released, while police used robots and drone footage to confirm the gunman was dead inside the barricaded building.
Midland, a city of about 140,000 in West Texas' oil region, was near the site of a 2019 Odessa-Midland rampage that killed seven people and wounded two dozen.
