Summary
Dr. Murtaza S Bagwala said hypertension often goes undetected because early warning signs are mild and easy to dismiss, including frequent headaches, dizziness, fatigue, head heaviness, blurred vision, irritability, poor sleep and breathlessness while walking.
Those symptoms are commonly blamed on stress, work pressure or lack of sleep, delaying checks until blood pressure readings are already significantly high.
Hypertension is known as a silent killer because it can cause little or no obvious symptoms while gradually damaging the heart, brain, kidneys and eyes.
Regular blood pressure screening is especially important after age 30 or for people with family history, diabetes, chronic stress, obesity or smoking, Bagwala said.
