More than 237,000 NIPSCO and ComEd customers were still without power Friday morning after overnight storms tore across Illinois and Indiana.
The National Weather Service confirmed multiple tornado touchdowns from June 11 and said survey crews will spend days assessing damage in hard-hit areas including Kouts, Merrillville, Bartlett, Naperville, Streator and Dwight.
ComEd reported over 165,000 customers affected across more than 4,000 active outages, while NIPSCO listed more than 72,000 outages and had shut off power to most of Gary on Thursday night.
Merrillville set up a command center near 61st and Cleveland streets and warned residents about downtown road closures and fallen utility lines, while cleanup spread from Chicago's western suburbs into northwest Indiana.
