Summary
A 4Warn Weather Alert is in effect for Metro Detroit from 9 p.m. Thursday to 2 a.m. Friday as an organized line of severe thunderstorms moves west to east across Southeast Michigan.
70 mph straight-line wind gusts are the main threat, with forecasters also warning of 1-inch hail, localized flooding and a brief spin-up tornado that could form with little warning.
Western parts of Southeast Michigan could be hit shortly after 9 p.m., with Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties facing the strongest storms roughly between 10 p.m. and midnight before the line reaches the Lake Huron shoreline by 1 a.m.
The Storm Prediction Center places the region in slight to enhanced risk, with the greatest concern from near the Ohio border to the M-59 corridor, especially near and west of US-23.
The threat should end after 2 a.m. as a cold front moves through, bringing cooler, less humid air Friday before another round of showers and thunderstorms late Saturday night into Sunday.
