OpenAI Taps Sottiaux to Merge ChatGPT and Codex for 1 Billion-User Super App

Thibault Sottiaux was appointed head of OpenAI core products last month, putting him in charge of combining ChatGPT and Codex into a personalized AI “super app” for nearly 1 billion weekly users.
OpenAI is betting the overhaul will revive growth ahead of a potential IPO and help fend off Google and Anthropic by turning ChatGPT into a proactive agent for personal and work tasks.
The effort is being built largely on Codex, one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing revenue streams, with features already in the Codex app set to move into ChatGPT in the coming weeks.
OpenAI has redirected resources by shutting stand-alone products including Sora and a science platform, while Sottiaux’s influence has grown as several executives tied to those teams departed.
Earlier agent products such as Operator and ChatGPT Agent saw limited adoption, leaving OpenAI to prove that improved models and gradual releases can teach consumers to trust broader automation.
