Samuel Marcum, an officer with the Lake Royale Police Department in North Carolina, was fired and arrested Wednesday over allegations he had sexual encounters in his patrol car while on duty.
Investigators say Marcum threw his body camera into Lake Royale to hide the encounters; he had initially claimed the equipment was lost during an ice storm.
On June 6, Marcum changed his account and admitted discarding the camera because he feared discipline for allowing his girlfriend into the patrol car.
He now faces charges including obstruction of justice, making false official statements, injury to personal property and conduct unbecoming of an officer, with the investigation still ongoing.
