Summary
Saturday will bring Tarik Skubal back to Detroit’s rotation against Cleveland, less than five weeks after arthroscopic elbow surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow.
One High-A rehab start cleared the way: Skubal threw five scoreless innings, allowed two hits and struck out six after the less invasive NanoNeedle procedure.
Sunday could add Casey Mize, pending one more bullpen session; the right-hander had a 2.27 ERA over nine starts before going on the injured list.
Those returns could push Detroit toward a six-man rotation with Troy Melton, Framber Valdez, Jack Flaherty and Keider Montero, before another roster decision when Justin Verlander is due back later this month.
Detroit has won six of eight and sits 5.5 games out of an AL wild-card spot despite being 12 games under .500, giving this weekend’s Cleveland series added weight.
