The catch is that the $499 MacBook Neo is cheap because Apple stripped it down in ways that matter for many students over a four-year degree. Its biggest compromise is performance headroom. The Neo uses an A18 Pro smartphone-class chip rather than a newer M-series laptop chip, and the base model pairs it with just 8GB of unified memory and 256GB of storage. That is enough for writing, web work, streaming, and light coursework, but it is a weak fit for demanding STEM software, design apps, video editing, large research files, or heavy multitasking. Over time, the low RAM also means more reliance on SSD “swap,” which is slower than real memory. The low sticker price also hides feature cuts. The base student model reportedly lacks Touch ID, has no keyboard backlight, uses a more basic mechanical trackpad, and offers only two USB-C ports. One of those ports is much slower than the other, and there is no Thunderbolt or MagSafe. External display support is limited to a single 4K monitor, which can be restrictive for students who use multi-screen setups. There are also quality-of-life tradeoffs. Battery life is the weakest in Apple’s current laptop lineup, charging is slower, and the display is less advanced than a MacBook Air’s, lacking features such as P3 wide color and True Tone. So the Neo is a strong value for basic college use, but the hidden cost is lower longevity, tighter storage, and fewer features than the price initially suggests.
