Summary
Said Abdullahi Ereg, 47, surrendered to federal authorities, becoming the first person taken into custody from the FBI’s new Most Wanted Fraudsters list unveiled less than a week ago.
Federal prosecutors say the former Minneapolis grocery and deli owner fraudulently obtained more than $4.2 million from the Federal Child Nutrition Program during the pandemic through Feeding Our Future.
Court filings allege Evergreen Grocery and Deli claimed to serve more than 3,000 meals twice daily, seven days a week, then laundered proceeds through foreign accounts while funding a lavish lifestyle.
The FBI said Ereg had been wanted since 2024 and contacted authorities through his lawyer one day after the list’s launch to signal he was willing to return to the United States.
The arrest gives an early test to the Trump administration’s broader fraud crackdown, which includes a White House task force and a newly created National Fraud Enforcement Division.
