Summary
Airbus Defence and Space and Diehl Defence signed a new agreement at ILA Berlin 2026 to intensify cooperation on integrated air and missile defence, extending their work beyond existing ground-based air-defence systems.
The deal builds on their IRIS-T SLM partnership, with Airbus supplying combat-proven command-and-control architecture and Diehl providing the overall system, including effectors and launchers.
One option under the agreement is a shared "battle lab" to develop next-generation command layers and product upgrades aimed at a more resilient, fully networked shield aligned with NATO and ESSI requirements.
Ukraine has already validated the joint system's performance in combat, and the companies said Germany, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland have adopted the air-defence solutions.
Airbus cast the expanded tie-up as a platform for further growth of the European Sky Shield Initiative, positioning the partnership for existing and new European customers.
