June 6 marked Brookfield’s first farmers market of the season, turning Village Hall’s parking lot into a busy vendor space for food, plants, art, jewelry and services.
June-through-October operations require planning that starts in January, market director Gina Sharenow said, though this year’s opening came together more smoothly than usual despite onboarding many new vendors.
SNAP and Illinois Link users could spend benefits on prepared food and receive matching funds for produce and other farm goods, while Cycle Brookfield ran a bike valet to encourage riding to the market.
Vendors from nearby communities, including a Berwyn artist, a 3-year-old Palos Heights farm and a handmade flower business, said Brookfield’s turnout and community atmosphere make the market an attractive stop.
