That said, Sony has not exited live service altogether. It is still publicly backing Marathon, and Bungie says it plans to support the game for years with smaller updates. Sony’s own guidance suggests it does not expect Bungie-related impairment to continue at the same level in FY2026. The company is also using PlayStation Plus to extract value from Destiny 2’s back catalog by adding the Legacy Collection to PS Plus Extra, a move that can help engagement and subscriptions even after new content has ended. What has changed is the scale of Sony’s ambition. Its original plan for a large slate of live-service releases has been heavily reduced, with multiple projects canceled and several studios closed. The strategy now looks less like an aggressive expansion and more like a selective salvage operation: keep a few bets alive, cut weaker ones, and focus on profitability rather than volume.
