Summary
A young girl remained missing Wednesday after a large wave swept her, her mother and a sibling into the ocean at Treasure Island Beach around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Two bystanders pulled the mother and one child from the water, but the girl was not found; two rescuers were treated after the incident.
Laguna Beach Marine Safety, Orange County Harbor Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard searched overnight with drones and other air resources, then widened the effort to adjacent beaches and possibly citywide.
Surf as high as 10 feet, poor water clarity and strong rip currents near Table Rock Beach hampered the search, and officials warned hazardous conditions could persist through Thursday.
Marine Safety Chief Kai Bond said crews were essentially in recovery mode while still holding out hope; the family was visiting from outside the area.
