Summary
250-400 calories and 55-70 grams of sugar in a single dirty soda can exceed double the American Heart Association’s daily added-sugar limit, dietitian Erin Palinski-Wade said.
Doctors said the mix of soda, syrups and cream can trigger sharp blood-sugar spikes and crashes, with the greatest danger for people with insulin resistance, prediabetes or diabetes.
One Crumbl dirty soda drew particular alarm after Dr. Mark Hyman said it contains 186 grams of sugar—about the equivalent of 19 Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
The drinks, which began in Utah soda shops and spread through social media, are now appearing at major chains including McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Sonic and Dunkin.
Nutrition experts said regular intake of such sugary beverages can reinforce cravings and raise long-term risks including obesity, fatty liver disease, heart disease and dementia, urging smaller portions or seltzer-based alternatives.
