A round struck an LAPD officer in the chest during a gunfight at the end of a stolen-car pursuit in Boyle Heights, but his ballistic vest absorbed the impact and he was listed in stable condition.
The fleeing driver was also hit in the chest after exchanging gunfire with officers near Marietta and Garnet streets around 2:15 p.m.; his condition was not disclosed.
Investigators recovered a gun at the scene and were still trying to determine the sequence of shots, including whether the officer was hit by the suspect or by police gunfire.
The chase began in South Los Angeles and ended with officers apprehending the suspect on the ground, while paramedics took the injured officer and the suspect away in separate ambulances.
