Summary
A British Journal of Nutrition study linked 7 to 8 daily cups of combined tea, coffee and water to a lower risk of premature death from any cause, with 2 coffees and 3 teas tied to up to a 45% reduction.
More than 182,000 people were tracked for 13 years, with questionnaires recording beverage intake to assess the combined effects of tea and coffee rather than studying each drink separately.
Tea and coffee appeared to add benefits beyond water because antioxidants such as polyphenols, chlorogenic acid and catechins may reduce inflammation, oxidative stress and insulin resistance.
The researchers said those effects could help lower risks tied to type 2 diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome, though they cautioned that too much caffeine can disrupt sleep and raise heart rate, while excess water can upset electrolyte balance.
