Beyond the headline numbers, the quake’s impact is severe. Buildings, schools, shops and homes collapsed or were badly damaged across southern Mindanao. In General Santos, authorities reported widespread structural failures, power outages, communications disruptions and the temporary closure of the international airport. Tsunami waves of up to 1.4 meters were recorded in parts of the coast, damaging at least one village after mass evacuations. Rescue efforts remain dangerous because of strong aftershocks, some reaching magnitude 6.5, which threaten already weakened buildings and slow searches for survivors. That means the true toll is not only measured in confirmed deaths, injuries and missing people, but also in displacement, trauma, interrupted schooling, damaged livelihoods and the continuing risk facing both residents and emergency crews.

At least 32 people were killed and more than 200 injured after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Mindanao on Monday morning, prompting tsunami warnings in the Philippines and Indonesia that were later lifted.
USGS said the quake hit 24.7 kilometers west-southwest of Burias at a depth of 35 kilometers, sending 1-meter waves into nearby coasts and causing tsunami damage in at least one village.
General Santos, a southern port city of more than 700,000, was among the hardest-hit areas, with multiple buildings and houses collapsing as rescuers searched for missing people.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the national government was moving quickly to coordinate disaster response in Mindanao, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire where earthquakes and tsunamis are frequent.
