Rand Halawani, 20, was released Sunday after six days in Israeli detention, but must remain under house arrest for five days, according to her mother.
Israeli police had detained the Palestinian national women’s team player last Tuesday after summoning her, linking her and an 18-year-old man to a Jerusalem incident in which objects were allegedly thrown from a balcony at marchers below.
Wissam Halawani said her daughter had endured “very difficult times” during the detention and that the family felt “overwhelming joy” at her return home.
The Palestinian Football Association hailed the release in a late Sunday statement, framing it as the freeing of a national team player and posting an image of Halawani in the team’s red kit.
