President Ferdinand Marcos ordered classes suspended at all levels in affected parts of Mindanao until further notice after a magnitude 7 earthquake struck offshore and prompted tsunami warnings.
Civil defence and disaster management agencies are coordinating the response, while the Department of Social Welfare and Development was told to ready relief goods and evacuation centres.
Marcos said the suspension was aimed at protecting children as authorities assess the quake's impact and manage risks tied to the tsunami alerts.
