$24.7 million on Friday put Paramount and Miramax's “Scary Movie 6” atop the domestic box office from 3,490 theaters, with the rebooted parody franchise heading for a $56 million opening weekend.
That pace would top the series' best debut of $49.7 million set by “Scary Movie 4” in 2006, while already putting the $30 million production comfortably on track for profitability.
$11.7 million Friday for Amazon MGM's “Masters of the Universe” left it in second and aiming for just $30 million by Sunday, a muted start against its $200 million budget.
$7.9 million on its second Friday kept A24's “Backrooms” in third as it heads for $25 million despite a 69% drop, while “Obsession” continued its breakout run toward $151 million domestic.
